Determining Whale Bearings from Acoustic Data

Harvey Mudd College Engineering Department-sponsored proof of concept to develop method to distinguish whales and track their paths
• Determined feasible method to distinguish whale sounds and developed
effective time-delay bearing algorithms
• Created MATLAB user interface to calculate bearing of individual whale
sounds, recorded from three hydrophones
• Recommended a revised setup of underwater microphones to reduce
position errors from 25% to 2.5%
